Asbjørnsen & Moe
About the Storyteller
Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe were pivotal figures in the collection of Norwegian folklore and fairy tales, often referred to as the 'Asbjørnsen and Moe' duo. Both born in Norway in the early 19th century, they met as students and bonded over their shared interest in the rich oral traditions of their homeland. Asbjørnsen, who pursued studies in natural sciences, and Moe, who delved into theology, combined their diverse academic backgrounds to meticulously gather and document the folk stories that had been passed down through generations. Their collaboration resulted in the compilation of 'Norske Folkeeventyr' (Norwegian Folktales), first published in 1841-1844, which played a significant role in preserving Norway's cultural heritage. Their work was crucial in the Norwegian national romanticism movement, emphasizing the importance of local traditions and narratives. Asbjørnsen also contributed to natural history and education, while Moe eventually became a bishop, further influencing Norwegian culture and literature.
