Clement C. Moore
About the Storyteller
Clement Clarke Moore was an American writer and professor, best known for his timeless contribution to Christmas folklore, 'A Visit from St. Nicholas,' commonly known as 'The Night Before Christmas.' Born on July 15, 1779, in New York City, Moore was the son of Benjamin Moore, the president of Columbia College (now Columbia University) and an Episcopal bishop. Clement Moore received a classical education at Columbia College, graduating in 1798 and later earning a master's degree. Moore spent much of his career as a professor of Oriental and Greek Literature at the General Theological Seminary in New York. Although 'The Night Before Christmas' was first published anonymously in 1823, Moore's authorship was later confirmed, and the poem became a cornerstone of Christmas traditions in the United States and beyond. His work significantly shaped the modern image of Santa Claus and festive customs associated with Christmas.
