About the Storyteller

John Francis Campbell, commonly known as J. F. Campbell, was a distinguished Scottish folklorist and writer, born in 1821. Educated in Edinburgh and Eton, and later at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow, Campbell was deeply influenced by the rich oral traditions of the Scottish Highlands. His career as a folklorist was marked by a passionate commitment to preserving the traditional stories of Scotland, which were at risk of being lost in the wake of modernization. Campbell's most notable contribution to literature is his collection of folktales, 'Popular Tales of the West Highlands,' published between 1860 and 1862. This work was groundbreaking in its methodical recording of oral traditions, capturing the linguistic nuances of Gaelic and bringing the vibrancy of Scottish folklore to a wider audience. Campbell's dedication to the cultural heritage of Scotland has solidified his legacy as a key figure in the preservation and dissemination of Celtic folklore.
