About the Storyteller

Jean de La Fontaine was a prominent French fabulist and poet, best known for his collection of fables, 'Fables Choisies, Mises en Vers.' Born in 1621 in Château-Thierry, France, La Fontaine was the son of a government official. Initially studying law, he soon turned to literature, inspired by the classical authors such as Aesop and Phaedrus. La Fontaine's fables, published in several volumes from 1668 to 1694, are known for their wit, moral lessons, and reflection of human nature. These fables often featured animals with human characteristics, serving as a subtle commentary on society and politics. La Fontaine enjoyed the patronage of prominent figures such as Nicolas Fouquet and later, Louis XIV's mistress, Madame de Montespan. He was elected to the French Academy in 1684, despite his controversial reputation. La Fontaine's work has had a lasting impact on literature and culture, influencing generations of storytellers.
