About the Storyteller

Zitkala-Ša, born Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, was a prominent Yankton Dakota Sioux writer, editor, translator, musician, teacher, and political activist. Born in 1856 on the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota, she was educated at a Quaker missionary school, which sparked her lifelong advocacy for Native American rights. Zitkala-Ša dedicated her life to preserving her cultural heritage and sharing it with a broader audience. Her collection 'Old Indian Legends,' published in 1901, introduced traditional Sioux folklore to a wider public. Through her work, she aimed to combat the cultural erasure of Native American traditions. Beyond folklore, her writings include essays and autobiographical works that address the complexities of her identity and the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples in America. Zitkala-Ša's contributions to literature and her activism have left a lasting impact on both Native American culture and the broader American literary canon.
