The Story of the First Calender, Son of a King (Modernized)

To explain how I lost my right eye and became a Calender, you should know that I am the son of a king. My father's only brother ruled a neighboring country and had two children, a daughter and a son, who were my age.

As I grew up and gained more freedom, I visited my uncle's court every year, staying for about two months. My cousin and I became very close. The last time I saw him, he was especially happy to see me and threw a big feast in my honor. After we ate, he said, "Cousin, you would never guess what I've been doing since your last visit! Right after you left, I had a building constructed based on my own design. It's finished now, and I want to show it to you. But first, you must promise two things: to be loyal to me and to keep my secret."

Of course, I didn't hesitate to promise him anything he asked. He asked me to wait a moment and returned with a beautifully dressed lady, but he didn't introduce her, so I didn't ask her name. We sat down and chatted about various things, drinking to each other's health. Suddenly, the prince said, "Cousin, we have no time to lose. Please escort this lady to a certain spot where you'll find a newly built dome-like tomb. You can't miss it. Go inside and wait for me. I won't be long."

As promised, I prepared to do as he asked. I took the lady's hand and led her by moonlight to the place the prince described. We had just arrived when he joined us, carrying a small vessel of water, a pickaxe, and a bag of plaster.
