The Poor Man and the Rich Man (Modernized)

Author: Brothers Grimm

Once upon a time, when the Lord himself still walked the earth among people, he found himself tired and caught by nightfall before reaching an inn. There were two houses facing each other on the road ahead; one was large and beautiful, and the other was small and poor. The large house belonged to a rich man, and the small one to a poor man.

The Lord thought, "I won't be a burden to the rich man; I'll stay the night with him." When the rich man heard someone knocking at his door, he opened the window and asked the stranger what he wanted. The Lord replied, "I just need a place to stay for the night."

The rich man looked the traveler up and down, and since the Lord was wearing simple clothes and didn't seem to have much money, he shook his head and said, "No, I can't take you in. My rooms are full of herbs and seeds, and if I let everyone who knocks stay, I'd soon be begging myself. Go find somewhere else to stay," and with that, he shut the window, leaving the Lord outside.
