How Mungghee, or Mussels, were Brought to the Creeks (Modernized)

One day, long ago, a sea-gull was flying over the Western plains carrying a mussel. Wahn the crow saw her and, curious about what she carried, chased after her. Scared of being caught, she dropped the mussel.

Seeing it fall, Wahn stopped chasing and swooped down to check out this strange thing. Standing beside it, he tilted his head and looked at it closely. Then he gave it a peck. He liked the taste, so he pecked again and again until the fish in one side of the shell was gone. He didn't notice there was a fish in the other side too, so he picked up the empty shell, as he thought, and threw it into the creek. There, this mussel thrived and multiplied, all that followed her being like her, one fish enclosed between two shells, unlike the one the sea-gull had brought, which had two fish, one on each side.

Not knowing he had thrown a mussel mother into the creek, Wahn decided to chase the sea-gull and get more, or find out where she had brought the one he liked so much, so he could get some. Off he flew in the direction she had gone. He caught up with her some miles up the creek beside a big waterhole. Before she saw him coming, he swooped down on her, shouting, “Give me more of that fish in two shells you brought.”

“I have no more. Let me go.”
