There was once a poor man named Martin. He was so poor that when his wife gave birth to a little boy, he couldn't find anyone willing to be the child's godmother.

"No," he told his wife, "no one I've asked is willing to hold this baby at the christening."

The poor mother cried and moaned, and he tried to comfort her as best he could.

"Don't worry, my dear wife. I promise your son will be christened. I'll take him to church myself, and if I can't find a godmother any other way, I'll ask a woman I meet on the road."
