Princess Rosette Part IV: The Second Day of the Festival (Modernized)

In the morning, a rough servant brought Rosette bread and milk and offered to help her dress. Rosette, not wanting this rude servant to see her change of clothes, smiled and said she was used to doing her own hair and dressing herself. Rosette then began getting ready. After washing and combing her hair, she wanted to use the beautiful carbuncle she had worn the day before, but was surprised to find the ebony case gone. In its place was a small wooden trunk with a folded paper on top. She picked it up and read the instructions:

“Here are your things, Rosette. Dress yourself as you were dressed yesterday, in the clothes you brought from the farm.”

Rosette didn't hesitate, certain her godmother would help her at the right time. She styled her pullet wing differently from the day before, put on her dress, necklace, shoes, and bracelets, and then looked in the mirror.

She was amazed by her reflection. She was dressed in the richest and most splendid riding suit of sky-blue velvet with pearl buttons as large as walnuts. Her stockings were bordered with a wreath of pearls, and her headpiece was a sky-blue velvet cap with a long, dazzling white plume that reached her waist, attached by a single pearl of unmatched beauty. Her boots were also blue velvet, embroidered with gold and pearls. Her bracelets and necklace were made of pearls so large and pure that a single one could pay for the king’s palace.
